May It Be

Saturday, December 17th, 2011

I don’t know about you, but I have plans for my life. I’ve been dreaming dreams and making plans for myself ever since I was a kid. Plans about where I want to go, plans about things I want to do, and plans about who I want to be. Sometimes, many times, my plans don’t work out. God has different ideas. I don’t always take that well.

As I was reading the Christmas Story, I couldn’t help but think that Mary, the mother of Jesus, probably had some plans herself. She was engaged, after all, and was most certainly thinking about and planning her wedding and the items she would need to take into her new household. Whether she and Joseph loved each other, we don’t know, but I can’t help think that she was looking into the future, thinking about her roles as a wife, mistress of her home, and – some day -a mother.

Talk about a change of plans, then, when an angel appears to her:

The angel went to her and said, “Greetings, you who are highly favored! The Lord is with you.”

Yup, that’s the sound of plans changing.

Mary was greatly troubled at his words and wondered what kind of greeting this might be.

Ha. No kidding!

The angel proceeds to tell her that she was to give birth to the Messiah and that her Aunt Elizabeth, who was barren and up in years, was also pregnant. Wow.

Mary and Joseph lived in today’s equivalent of a small town. She must have known how people would talk, what they would say about her. She must have wondered what Joseph would think about all this; after all, they weren’t just engaged, they were betrothed. That meant that she was legally his wife – they just hadn’t had the wedding ceremony yet. She must have known she would live the rest of her life amidst knowing looks and wagging tongues. Did she panic? Did she freak out? No, according to the Bible, her response was,

“I am the Lord’s servant,” Mary answered. “May it be to me as you have said.”

She didn’t hesitate. She didn’t ask for time to think it over. She didn’t talk back about how inconvenient this was for her. She simply accepted.

How can this be? How can someone have all of their plans stripped away and replaced by a badge of shame and STILL glorify God? How does she, after one conversation, push all of her dreams aside with such a calm and noble attitude?

We are given a clue in verses 46 through 56, in the 1st chapter of Luke:

And Mary said:

“My soul glorifies the Lord
and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior,
for he has been mindful of the humble state of his servant.
From now on all generations will call me blessed,
for the Mighty One has done great things for me – holy is his name.
His mercy extends to those who fear him,
from generation to generation.
He has performed mighty deeds with his arm:
he has scattered those who are proud in their inmost thoughts.
He has brought down rulers from their thrones but has lifted up the humble.
He has filled the hungry with good things but has sent the rich away empty.
He has helped his servant Israel,
remembering to be merciful to Abraham and his descendants forever,
even as he said to our fathers.

Sounds to me like Mary was a woman of faith. Mary may have been from a small town, but she was no dummy. She knew the promises of God. And she was smart enough to know to overlook her personal afflictions and hassles and focus instead on the fulfillment of those promises. She knew she was a part of something greater. She saw her role for what it was: an honor and a blessing.

I have a feeling the plan-changing didn’t stop here for Mary. After all, Jesus was the Messiah, but he wasn’t the Messiah the people thought he would be. He didn’t come in earthly riches and power. He lived 30 years in the same little town his parents were raised, probably working as a carpenter in his father’s shop. Mary didn’t get to live a life of queenly splendor. She became the wife of a poor carpenter and the mother of several children. There was no glory or honor. No bestsellers or speaking tours. No entourage or celebrity status. She probably spent her days wiping noses and keeping house.

Many historians believe she was widowed some time before Jesus started his ministry. I’m guessing that wasn’t something she had dreamed for herself.

She often accompanied Jesus on his travels. Travel was hard in those days. I doubt it was how she thought she’d spend her later years. That’s hardly the retirement most of us long for.

She was at the foot of the cross when her eldest son was crucified. That probably wasn’t in her plan book either. Did it feel like a defeat? Was there a part of her that questioned God? No matter how great her faith, I cannot help but think about how heartbroken and grieved she must have been. Even after he had ascended into heaven, it must have been hard on her. Sure, her son wasn’t dead, but she wouldn’t see him for the rest of her life on earth, either.

Mary isn’t revered simply because she was a human vessel for the Messiah, but because of her willingness to serve God – no matter what that looked like and no matter what the cost. For all of the trials and hardships, there was immeasurable blessings as well; the blessing of being an integral part of the work of the creator of the universe. The honor of a holy, eternal God choosing a lowly here-today-gone-tomorrow human to partner with him in his plan for all of mankind. I’m so glad she had the wisdom to see that.

The same deal is offered us today. Maybe not to raise the Son of God, but to raise sons and daughters of God. We, too, are invited to partner with God to usher in his kingdom. We don’t have to be perfect, or wealthy, or highly educated. We just have to be willing.

“I am the Lord’s servant. May it be to me as you have said.”

Weekly Update: 9/11/11-917/11

Monday, September 19th, 2011

On Sunday, Ben and I helped with Sunday school. I’ve been serving in the 2 year old class, but it was time for a change and Ben offered to help, too. Now we are helping with the 1st-5th graders – and we really love it!

We headed up to Wentzville on Wednesday to tour the GM plant that Ben’s brother works at. It was actually pretty interesting and the boys seemed entertained by it. Unfortunately, it was a super cold and rainy day and traffic was crummy on the way back.

Our Texas friends, Brandon, Erin, and Jeremy ate dinner with us. Jeremy headed home and Brandon and Erin unloaded all of their stuff so they could stay until Saturday.

Erin and I got a little thrift store shopping in on Thursday and Friday. I’ll have to upload pictures of some of my cool finds.

Friday night was a blast. We invited another family over for a potluck dinner and we sat outside around the bonfire. The kids ran around for HOURS and totally wore themselves out. Even so, everyone stayed until after 10 – it was just a good time. We then packed up the boys and drove them out to my sister so they could stay the night there. They were so excited!

Since the boys were away, that means we actually got to sleep in on Saturday. Brandon and Erin left early so Ben and I got up and got a few projects done. I’d painted an old table and stools, to be placed in the boys room, but we needed to cut the legs down to make them more kid-friendly. Ben made the cuts, I sanded and did paint touch-ups, and then we loaded everything into their room. I cleaned the house, ran to the grocery store, and then waited for my friends to arrive for girl’s night. Three of the girls from my wedding party, who had been good friends of mine long ago, decided that it was high time we got together. They arrived at 6 and we didn’t stop talking until after midnight. The hours flew by! It was decided we needed to make it a quarterly event. There’s nothing better than catching up with old/good friends!

Love: Day 5

Saturday, February 5th, 2011

Jesus said to him, ‘You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like it: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ Matthew 22:37–39

Random Reads: The Kite Runner

Tuesday, October 19th, 2010

The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini is a book that was suddenly everywhere I looked. For a long time the title failed to interest me, then I found it in a thrift store and decided it was worth the risk.  Once I got the book home, it sat on my shelf, completely ignored. I wasn’t sure I would find it very interesting. I’m glad to say I was wrong!

I dug into The Kite Runner one night and couldn’t put it down until I was finished. The story gripped me from the start and kept me interested all the way through until the end. Not only was the storyline interesting and the characters real, but I found the customs and manners of the Afghan people very intriguing, as well.

The story is told from the point of view of Amir, a young Afghan boy. The novel centers on his friendship with Hassan, a boy who is the son of his father’s servant. Despite their differences, the two are close friends who spend much time together, sharing experiences and secrets. Their world is completely torn apart in the space of just a few moments. Neither boy is ever the same again.

The Kite Runner is about true friendship, sacrifice, betrayal, the longing for redemption, and finally, forgiveness. It’s a story about how secrets can hurt and haunt and affect us for years. It’s a powerful example of how our world can be changed in just a few seconds, but also, it’s how we choose to respond to that change that ultimately takes us down one path or another. Hosseini shows us, very powerfully, that it’s never too late to expose our secrets, make things right, and receive forgiveness – even if that forgiveness can only comes from ourselves.

Busy, Busy, Busy

Monday, October 11th, 2010

I’ve been…busy! Thus the sad lack of content.

I’ve been taking a 16-week Intermediate Algebra class and my computer and English classes just started. Luckily, those are only 8 weeks long!

I have a couple of book reviews I need to post, as well as an update on my couponing and food storage. I’ve been loving the deals I’m scoring and am quickly running out of room to store it all in!

More to come…soon. I promise!

Random Reads: Stormy Weather by Paulette Jiles

Friday, August 13th, 2010

I just finished reading Stormy Weather by Paulette Jiles, author of Enemy Women, a book I’ve also read and own.

Stormy Weather is set in the Great Depression. It’s a story centered around a young woman and her itinerant family. Her father works on oil pipelines and derricks scattered around Texas, drinking and gambling most of the money away while he’s at it. He dies and leaves his wife and three daughters with nothing but the hope of returning to the abandoned family farm. The long-abandoned farm requires hard work and commitment, and presents them with hardships of all kinds. The women struggle to reconcile their long-held dreams of the farm against the reality of life on a farm – especially one so run-down. Along the way the women learn to care for and take care of one another. They learn to do things they never would have dreamed they could do and in turn are able to move forward and have the life they dreamed of for so long.

A sub-plot of Stormy Weather is the story of Smoky Joe, a wild racehorse that was purchased by their gambling father. The horse is dangerous and moody….and fast. The horse is a wonderful metaphor of the main character herself. Both are a bit wild and determined, but eventually find some solidarity and purpose and are able to move forward: leaving their past behind and embracing what the future holds for them.

Random Reads: Thrift Store Books

Saturday, July 10th, 2010

This is why I love the thrift store: $124 worth of books for $6. And they are all in very good condition! The downside, is that you never know what you are going to get. But if you want a specific book you could always check it out of the library for free! Personally, l LOVE the thrill of going not knowing what books I’ll end up bringing home. I’ve read some really great books that way. A few stinkers, too, but I’m able to find some kernel of truth in each book, so it’s no great loss.

I’m going to start doing short reviews of the books I’ve read recently. I’ve hesitated simply because they aren’t new books. Some of them have been out for ages. But the upside is that if you see something you think you’ll like you won’t have to sit on a waiting list at the library, right?

Weekly Update: 6/28/2010-7/2/2010

Saturday, July 3rd, 2010

Let me back up a bit, to Saturday, the 26th. We celebrated Luke’s 6th birthday party at the Magic House. I had no idea you could do a birthday party there. We kept the guest list pretty limited and it was very reasonably priced for what we got! He chose the science theme. I’m telling you, that child is going to be an engineer/scientist/SOMETHING. We all really enjoyed ourselves. We had a small family party at home. No frills, just cake and ice cream and present opening, but it was so nice to have everyone together.

When did my baby turn 6?

On Sunday we played hooky from church. Well, the boys and I did. They would not get out of bed and I was too tired to drag them out and put up with their crabbing and feet-dragging.

I had a Children Ministry Team Lead meeting on Tuesday. It was the first Team Lead meeting I’ve ever been invited to and I’ve been doing this for over a year. It was good to get caught up.

My mom came out late Wednesday night to stay the night. She had an appointment at the dentist the next day and I had to take her in. We had a nice time chatting. The boys showed off. She’s a wonderful grandmother.

On Thursday, the boys and I took mom to her appointment and camped out in the waiting room. The boys behaved themselves nicely and received several compliments and a sucker (at the DENTIST’S office!!!) for their good manners. I guess I’m not a total slacker at this child-rearing business! Then we headed over to Wal-Mart for about 2 hours (!) to wait for my mom’s prescription to be filled. I haven’t stepped foot in a Wal-Mart in years so two hours was a test of my patience. I broke down and bought a bag of animal crackers that we opened and snacked on throughout the duration of our wait. When in Rome, I guess.

We had a great time with our Life Group. The ladies sipped peach wine and watched Pride and Prejudice, while the guys played video games upstairs. Then our wonderful friends helped us put together the last of our pergola! We love them so much!

Ben was home all day Friday. I even went and got my hair cut. It’s been almost 4 months and it was looking pretty bad. I actually found a nice, local place that accepts the Spa Finder gift certificates I’ve had for YEARS now. Double yay. Then I did some thrift store shopping and found lots of cute stuff for a whopping $30! I also signed up for a third class for Fall. Since I received a scholarship, we decided I should put it to use! I chose a computer efficiency class. Looks easy enough. I saw the updated bill and it was awesome to see how much the scholarship reduced the charges!  I’d say this was a good week!
